Low oil level
Check the dipstick on a level surface with the engine warm and switched off, following the manufacturer method. Top up with the correct specification only. Persistent consumption needs investigation.
Oil leak
Spots under the car, burning-oil smell or a wet sump/gasket area can indicate a leak. Identify the source before simply topping up and driving on.
Dirty or overdue oil
Oil darkens in normal use, but overdue changes leave sludge and reduced protection. Follow the correct interval for your vehicle and driving style.
Wrong specification
Using the wrong viscosity or specification can affect lubrication, emissions systems and warranty conditions. Always match the manufacturer requirement.
