Not sure which car service your vehicle needs?

  • Not sure which car service your vehicle needs?

Here’s a clear breakdown of what each one covers and how to choose.

Most drivers know their car needs servicing. Fewer know what they are actually booking when they choose between interim, full and major. Here is a plain explanation.

Interim service

This is the lighter option, usually recommended every 6 months or 6,000 miles, whichever comes first. It covers the essentials: oil and filter change, fluid top-ups, tyre check, brake inspection and a visual check of key components.

It is not a complete health check. Think of it as keeping up with the basics between more thorough services.

Full service

A full service goes further. It covers everything in an interim service plus a more detailed inspection of filters, spark plugs, brakes, suspension, lights, steering and battery condition. Most manufacturers recommend a full service once a year or every 12,000 miles.

This is the most common service for everyday drivers and it gives you a thorough picture of your car’s condition.

Major service

A major service includes everything in a full service, with additional work on components that wear over a longer period. This often includes replacing the cabin filter, fuel filter and spark plugs, and a deeper inspection of belts, hoses and the braking system.

Major services are typically recommended every 2 years or 24,000 miles, though this varies by manufacturer and vehicle type.

How do you know which one you need?

Your car’s handbook will have a service schedule. If you have lost it, we can look it up for you. As a general guide: if you are new to a car and unsure of its history, book a full service so you know where you stand. If you are up to date with servicing but 6 months have passed, an interim will cover the basics. If you are coming up to 2 years or 24,000 miles, it is likely time for a major.
